Date & Time
Tuesday, November 4, 2025, 3:00 PM - 4:15 PM
Description

Abandoned mine lands are an environmental, social, and financial challenge for many countries, but opportunities exist to realize value from these lands while addressing these challenges. This session will explore some of the opportunities, such as applying a circular economy approach to extract critical minerals from tailings or waste rock; redeveloping remaining resources while cleaning up the land through innovative business and community partnerships, and even supporting unique and biodiverse habitats that can naturally develop on abandoned mine lands.

  • Rob Stevens, Senior Associate, IGF Secretariat

  • Peter Whitbread-Abrutat, Future Terrains, Author of 102 Things to do with a Hole in the Ground
