Bio
Geol. Joseph Ng’ang’a Kuria is a seasoned geologist and public servant with over two decades of experience in the mining, water, environment, and infrastructure sectors. He currently serves as Deputy Director, Geochemical Exploration, and Chief Superintending Geologist with the Government of Kenya, where he leads national geochemical exploration initiatives, advises on sustainable mining practices, and promotes environmental stewardship.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Nairobi, a Postgraduate Diploma in Basin Analysis and Petroleum Geology, and a Master of Science in Mineral Exploration and Mining Geology from Curtin University, Australia.

Throughout his career, Geol. Kuria has championed responsible mining, community empowerment, and environmental rehabilitation. As a Regional Mining Officer, he managed operations in mineral-rich regions such as Migori and Kitui, training artisanal and small-scale miners (ASMs) on safe mining, chemical-free gold processing, and gemstone value addition. His leadership in mine restoration and reforestation projects across Garissa and Tana River counties has contributed to sustainable land use and community livelihoods.

An accomplished hydrogeologist, he has supervised the siting and drilling of hundreds of boreholes across Eastern Africa and led a World Bank-funded aquifer mapping project in northeastern Kenya to improve water access in arid regions.

Beyond fieldwork, Geol. Kuria has been instrumental in shaping Kenya’s geoscience sector. He is the President of the Geological Society of Kenya and a Board Member of the Geologists Registration Board of Kenya, where he helps set professional standards and policy. Internationally, he chaired the Local Organizing Committee of the 30th Colloquium of African Geology (2025) and led the 3rd East African GEOEACE Conference (2024), strengthening Kenya’s collaboration with the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS).

Widely respected for blending technical expertise with community-centered approaches, Geol. Kuria continues to champion safe, inclusive, and sustainable development of Kenya’s natural resources.
