Ronald Steenblik has more than 40 years of international experience in the areas of trade, energy, and environmental policy, on which he has written widely. Prior to retiring from the organization in November 2018, Ronald was the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s Special Counselor for Fossil Fuel Subsidy Reform, in which capacity he oversaw the OECD’s work on government support to fossil fuels, and chaired the G20’s peer reviews of fossil-fuel subsidy reform. Over the past three decades he has researched issues at the nexus between trade and the environment, and agriculture and the environment, as well as fisheries policy. Now a non-resident Senior Fellow with the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), in 2006 and 2007 he served as the IISD’s first Director of Research for the Global Subsidies Initiative. Among his current activities are advising negotiations on liberalizing trade in environmental goods and services, and quantifying and reforming subsidies to fossil fuels, including subsidies to primary plastic production. He is also working on a book on international trade. Ronald holds a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania, and a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University.
