Bio
Carin Smaller is Director for Agriculture, Trade and Investment at the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD). She advises governments and donors on research, policy and legal issues related to food security, agriculture, trade and investment. She is the co-director and co-author of Ceres2030: Sustainable Solutions to End Hunger, a 3-year research project involving 86 researchers from 26 countries and 53 organisations, which was published in the science journal Nature, and which provides a roadmap for ending world hunger, double incomes of the poorest farmers, and protecting the climate. She is also the author of the IISD Guide to Negotiating Investment Contracts for Farmland and Water, the first attempt to create a model contract for developing countries to attract private sector investment in agriculture and food systems, while at the same time, promoting the needs of the poor and protecting the environment. She has over 20 years experience living and working in low and middle-income countries, including Tanzania, Namibia, Nepal and India. She holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Political Science from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.
